For many years, my main priority as a conductor was my work with Dorian Consort. With Dorian Consort, I generally programmed and performed early music, either focusing on repertoire outside of the more conventional canon or finding interesting ways to perform better-known pieces. You can find out more about Dorian Consort on our YouTube channel.
Alongside my work with Dorian Consort, I was the conductor of the CDI Orchestra in Cambridge in 2018, the Conductor in Residence for The Phoenix Music Society in 2018–2019, and the Artistic Director of Cambridge Opera Workshop a year later. In the latter two of these roles, I conducted new, and often complex, pieces for large ensembles, working with amateur and student musicians.
Since September 2022, I have been the conductor of Lambeth Wind Orchestra, leading rehearsals for this group of talented amateur musicians and performing concerts of repertoire ranging from jazz and film music to modern classics of the wind orchestra repertoire. I also conduct the choral society Leighton Buzzard Festival Singers and chamber choir Harpenden Music Makers.
I am always keen to discuss the wider historical context of a piece of music when working with an amateur ensemble: I strongly believe that rehearsals should have a pedagogical element where possible. With this in mind, I usually write my own programme notes for concerts, formally bringing together the elements we've discussed as a group throughout our preparation. Sample programme notes are available here.
